Practice Makes Perfect

The first step to getting your mindset right during yoga is to simply keep practicing. The more you do it, the better you’ll become at focusing your mind on the present moment. Just like with anything else in life, the key is to stick with it and be patient. If you find yourself having trouble time and time again, consider practicing yoga at home for shorter sessions. Set a timer and practice for 10 minutes. Once you get that down, you can increase the time. Eventually, focusing on the present moment will be easy!

Focus On Your Breath

One of the most important things to focus on during yoga is your breath. Taking deep, cleansing breaths helps to clear your mind and relax your body. If you find yourself getting lost in thought, take a few deep breaths and focus on the sensation of the air moving through your nose and into your lungs.

Set an Intention

Before each yoga session, it can be helpful to set an intention. This can be something as simple as focusing on your breath or letting go of negative thoughts. By setting an intention, you’re more likely to stay focused during your practice because you have a goal you can work towards, as opposed to just going through the motions.

Name the Thought

If an intrusive thought pops into your head during yoga, try to name it and let it go. For example, if you’re thinking about an upcoming work project, simply say to yourself “work project” and then let it go. Naming the thought can help to dissipate its power and allow you to get back to focusing on your practice. Additionally, naming your thought helps you acknowledge that your mind has wandered, which can make it easier for you to bring your focus back to your practice.
