What’s the Difference Between Mat and Reformer Pilates?
Both Mat and Reformer Pilates build strength, control, and core stability — they just use different tools to get there.
Mat Pilates uses bodyweight and occasionally small props like balls, bands, or rings. It builds foundational control, stability, and mobility using gravity and precision. Mat work strengthens deep core muscles and is incredibly effective even without equipment.
Reformer Pilates uses a spring-resistance machine that adds support and challenge. The moving carriage, adjustable springs, straps, and bars allow you to work muscles more deeply and precisely — great for strength training, mobility, and posture.
Brand-new to Pilates? Mat builds a great foundation.
Want deeper strength, tone, and mobility? Reformer adds resistance and control.
Recovering from an injury? Reformer can offer targeted support and modifications.
Like small-group or personal training? Reformer sessions are one-on-one or duo here.
Many students do both — they complement each other beautifully.
